The Making of Tongues

Photobucket

As you know, this year saw the death of American jazz drummer Steve Reid. Together with Kieran Hebden he has recorded an album called Tongues. This short documentary is about the making of that very album.

The boundary-breaker was one of the greatest drummers of recent times. He played in Sun Ra's arkestra, knew Coltrane, played as a session drummer at Motown (Martha and The Vandella’s "Heatwave") and the master drummer also found time to play with the likes of James Brown at the legendary Harlem Apollo, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Lester Bowie, Gary Bartz, Chief Bey, Archie Shepp, Sam Rivers, Dee Dee Bridgewater and many more. I mean this is a guy who at 19 was playing drums with Fela Kuti in Africa.

The half hour film is embedded below, and this is a good a time as any to incorporate the Giles Peterson hour long tribute with Kieron Hebdon also, which includes the tremendous version of 'Strings of Life.'
