Waffles All Day - Green Tea Sessions

Photobucket

For this Monday we suggest you take a special diet of green tea and waffles. Green Tea Session from Cologne Germany presents you special mixtape called Waffles All Day. Speaking of it’s structure, it is easy to spot three stylistic directions of it. One block is dedicated to classic stuff - jazz, soul, funk, some old school rock and other material very suitable for sampling. Another unit is made from golden age hip-hop and it’s jewels. And third dimension is dedicated to modern things - Beats, electronic, future jazz, bass music, house etc. At first those three goes one after another in sequence, but later they start switching sides and getting into each others territory. So quite a dynamic ride through thoroughly selected specimens with the waffle in a hand and a cup of tea in another.

Jon K - 'Want fi goh rave' mix

Photobucket

I was unwillingly fed a load of Bauhaus, Eno, Talking Heads, Japan etc. via my sister in the 80's, and although I thought a lot of it was rubbish at the time I've made up for it since. I always liked Reggae, but the Dancehall thing came a bit later... I heard Supercat and that was that… I guess the main inspiration for the mix was that golden period, when Reggae and Punk were crossing over regularly, the connection's been pretty well documented. One of my favorite characters from then was / is Linton Kwesi Johnson…

Hoya:Hoya badman Jon K just dropped this for clothing label Oi Polloi, serving as the eighth edition in their series which follows previous joints from the likes of Naive Melody, and Licorice Soul.

Com Truise - Komputer Cast 4

Photobucket
If there's one thing we know about Seth Haley aka Com Truise, it's that he has a passion for the '80s, vintage synthesizers and has been melting circuits since 1985. In a series of DJ mixes he calls Komputer Cast, Seth throws a few of his own tracks in with some of his '80s heroes journeying through a vintage synth-funk odyssey with the modern nostalgic individual, and ultimately conjuring memories of early computerized production technology. Treat yourself below, and don't forget that Cyanide Sisters is being remastered and released as an extended reissue by Ghostly on the 25th January 2011. Opolopo - Voltage Controlled Feelings

Photobucket

PIONEERZ & FUNKETEERZ! Please lend me yo' earzzzzzzzzzzz!!!

A journey into dance music, crossing a variety of genres including 80s funk, R&B, Italo, Broken Beat, Techno and more. I don't necessarily agree with the term being called a "Boogie Album", but the modern electronic sounds will appeal to most electronic music and cross over soul heads. It lies somewhere between Dam-Funk, Tangerine Dream and french monster Jean Michel Jarre.

'Voltage Controlled Feelings' is the sonic testimony of more than two decades of serious electro, funk and boogie studies from Swedish synth commander Opolopo!

Blending epic Blade Runner soundscapes and Krautrock sequencer lines into cruising west coast beats and beyond, he proves that science fiction and funk are not only compatible, but have always belonged together. 'Voltage Controlled Feelings' is a newly discovered planet orbiting a distant star, that also pays homage to the synthesizers, drum machines and the artists who influenced Opolopo's music. Echoes of Prince, Herbie Hancock, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream and Isao Tomita can be heard throughout the album.

The album came out on Tokyo Dawn in December, be sure to head over to grab it here whilst putting on your fine boogie shoes to catch the Opolopo starcruiser with this promotional mixtape.

Saturn Never Sleeps Sampler No. 2

Photobucket

Sampler No. 2 from the Saturn Never Sleeps label consists of artists representing many facets of the SNS electronic sound. From the experimental textures of Ramon Tejada, the ambient works of Rucyl, to the beat driven Soul Litchfield, the label pushes the envelope of sonic imagination. Also joining the SNS catalog is King Britt’s FiveSixMedia label, with tracks from Power Douglas, Ursula Rucker and Sylk130 rounding out the vibes.

Look out for 'Mr Whites' from the beat driven experiments of King Britt as Soul Litchfield lifted from the Headnod Acrobatics Vol. 1 album, and sit back as Fhloston Paradigm take the mysterious RVRSR tune from Power Douglas into uncharted waters. A trip into the fantastic.

The final track is a blueprint for the Philly soul resurgence. Produced by King Britt in 2000, the combination of live harp, electronics and acoustic piano is the perfect ending for the compilation.

Stones Throw Podcast #64

Photobucket

2011 is only four days old, but early omens indicate that it will be an auspicious one for fans of mythologically delayed projects. Stones Throw opens up with label leader and DJ extraordinaire Peanut Butter Wolf on the 1′s & 2′s, the man runs through a slew of material that you can expect to drop on Stones Throw in 2011.

The rumored reunion of Madvillain, the self-proclaimed America's Most Blunted, promises to satisfy fans of the enigmatic principals, MF Doom and producer Madlib. Last year, the pair dropped "Paper Mill,' as part of Adult Swim's Singles Program, a 2-minute swerve of non-sequitirs, Brazilian soul and boasts about being on the cover of Playbill.

The latest teasers from the sequel to 2004's ballyhooed "Madvillainy" find Doom "thanking our sponsor for financing the parts for this Frankenstein monster/Along with my partner who's a bro of few words/we did this research for true nerds and two birds." Over angelic coos, Doom slips comfortably into his metal-faced villain role, casting off dire threats and slick double-entrendres. It's more sequel than revolution, as Doom and Madlib give the fans what they want and expect: dusty samples, dirty beats and slippery raps.

Once almost exclusively a haven for underground hip-hop, the label has expanded to include R&B, soul, funk, dance music and obscure archival gems from all corners of the world. Accordingly, Wolf's mix includes new tracks from our boogie-bustin' cousin Dam-Funk (solo and in collaboration with Slave frontman Steve Arrington), electronic renaissance man James Pants, turntable king J. Rocc and Mayer Hawthorne, along with a spate of newcomers who will probably be on the cover of Playbill at this time next year.

Track Listing:
Madvillain: Avalanche & Victory Lap
Madlib: Two from Rock Konducta
MED: Even Though & Play with You
Dam-Funk feat. GT: Rest in Peace
Dam-Funk: I Wanna Do Some Things Wit U
Steve Arrington: Good Feeling & Higher
Jonti Dan AKA Danimals: Hornets Nest & Christmas Worm
The Stepkids: Shadows on Behalf & La La
James Pants: Kathleen & Beta
Vex Ruffin: Walking Sideways & Avalanche
Myron & E: Let Me See You Do It & On Broadway
CX Kidtronik feat. Jon Wayne: The Buddykrak
CX Kidtronik feat. 4 5th: She’s A Murderer
J. Rocc: Rocchead’s Delight & Supersound
Anika: Terry & No One’s There
Mayer Hawthorne: Drums (Demo)
Bryant K Steward: Daisy’s Grow
Unknown Artist: Same Thing Tomorrow

Ohbliv - Soulphonic Beat Tape

Photobucket

"...I’m my own worst critic and I know some of the stuff I put out isn’t ‘industry quality,’ but what I’m trying to go for is that rawness, and that purity. I think that’s what sets me apart. What I’m trying to do is speak to people’s souls. I’m trying to change how people listen to hip-hop music. Everything doesn’t have to sound crisp and clean. Everything doesn’t have to be right on point. My style is sloppy, on beat, off beat. What I choose to put out there, people may not feel or even appreciate, but it’s not made for them. It’s made for the people who can hear it. I just try to keep it honest and soulful.”

It was only right that Ohbliv produced a Beat Tape after the recent feature over on SHHO. This 28 minutes of pure dopeness gives just the merest glimpse into where the Richmond sounds are going.

Soul definitely comes to mind when listening to his beats. He samples from a massive collection of well known and unknown soul, funk, boogie, and R&B records from past decades that give his music a stirring quality of feel good melody. But as he says, he constructs it in an unconventional, sometimes messy, way. The finished product is a sound that is fresh, gritty, progressive, and full of soul. It’s definitively hip-hop: bold, raw, and unwavering.

Ohbliv has paid his dues and plays a significant role in cultivating hip-hop in Richmond. He has worked extensively with the 804’s best up and coming rapper, Nickelus F. Ohbliv is responsible for plenty of the tracks on Nickelus F’s last few mixtapes Season Premiere, Commercials, and Season Premiere HD. He is currently working on a tape for the label HW&W based out of Los Angeles, CA. Also, his production crew, CMLK (chocolate milk), have just dropped a cassette called Hydrosub. In Hydrosub, Ohbliv get’s a chance to diverge just a little bit from hip-hop and experiment with a more abstract groove style.

When it comes to music as the universal language, you’d be a hard-pressed in finding a better voice than the sounds of Ohbliv. Open your ears and tune in.

Myke Forte - Leo

Photobucket

Myke Forte is back at it again. He just dropped a brand new installment of his popular “Zodiak” series, which is now half way through the 12 scheduled releases, in addition to kicking off a brand new website.

Having taken some time away from the series whilst working on the Audiopixel project (out on Soapbox), created mainly with the Roland SP-404, Myke has also found time to produce a little something with Rosita Lynch. Watch out for that one, and meanwhile dig into the 5 prior releases of the Zodiac after the cut, if you've slept on them, over on his bandcamp and clock onto the latest episode below.
