Tokimonsta just did the latest mix for the folk over at oki-ni.

"I guess for this oki-ni mix, the theme was "Love with Sound," which is playing on the first track [in the mix] by White Noise, ‘Love without Sound’. I think I was going for a slightly odd romantic vibe, traveling through different genres of music that still maintain this eerie romantic feeling."

Teebs & B.Bravo at Sonar 2011: RBMA Radio

Photobucket

B.Bravo brings a touch of love to every dirty synth groove he gets his hands on. He ended up at outerspace hip hop beatmaking after years spent paying his dues behind the decks - and the education shows. For evidence, check his remixes for Spinnerty and John Robinson or his EP on Frite Nite, or catch him playing sax and keys in his current band Bayonics. The way he seems to communicate on a deeper level with his synths might have you think he's to San Francisco what DaM-FunK has been to Los Angeles recently - but Mr Mori has his very own lethal samurai bounce. Recorded live at Sónar 2011.

Photobucket

Southern Californian beatmaker, budding painter, and Flying Lotus compatriot Teebs was among the innumerable performers that descended upon Spain's 2011 Sónar Festival last week. Though we didn't catch his performance, the fine folks over at Red Bull Music Academy apparently had the foresight to record it. You can listen below to the kind of rhythmic wizardry young Mtendere Mondowa busted out of a couple of samplers in the embedded player below.

Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest (Documentary)

Photobucket

A hard-core fan himself, the actor and filmmaker Rapaport sets out on tour with A Tribe Called Quest in 2008, when they reunited to perform sold-out concerts across the country, almost ten years after the release of their last album, The Love Movement. As he travels with the band members (Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White), Rapaport captures the story of how tenuous their relationship has become; how their personal differences and unresolved conflicts continue to be a threat to their creative cohesion. When mounting tensions erupt backstage during a show in San Francisco, we get a behind-the-scenes look at their journey and contributions as a band and what currently is at stake for these long-time friends and collaborators.

Rapaport's film is as much a "Where are they now?" as a "Why did they matter in the first place?"—though he doesn't shortchange the latter question, bringing on a veritable who's-who of hip-hop stars (the Roots, the Beastie Boys, De La Soul) to answer the inquiry. It will come as no surprise to the group's legions of fans to learn that their appeal rested in the yin-yang rapping of the "abstract" rhymer Q-Tip and the earthy Phife, the Afrocentric positivity as a response to the increasingly nihilistic gangsterism of the day, and the wide range of samples (jazz, funk) the outfit employed. Still, Rapaport keeps the already converted in mind, giving us such moments as Q-Tip in his studio demonstrating how he pulled the drum track for the group's classic hit "Can I Kick It?" from one of his father's old Lonnie Smith records, and a round of Tribe associates discussing their favorite lyrics (popular choice: "Let me hit it from the back girl, I won't catch a hernia/Bust off on your couch, now you got Seaman's furniture").

But while Rapaport dutifully traces the trajectory of the group's career via talking heads, archival footage, and trips down memory lane where he revisits old haunts with Q-Tip, Phife, and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, his film is one rooted firmly in the present and specifically the melancholy of its difference from the past.

Soulection #35: Full Crate & Anthony Valadez

Photobucket

This show was one for the books! I had two individuals who I've grown up listening to for the pasts couple of years come in and vibe with me. This is monumental for Soulection. Full Crate out of Amsterdam (Producer/DJ/Engineer/Sound Designer) & LA's own Anthony Valadez (KCRW - DJ/Radio personality, Producer) laid down an interview and played some selections that they are really feeling at the moment. I started off the show with a SUPREME line up/selection of artists from all over the globe. This is definitely a show that you want to listen to. So much talent within, and Full Crate & Ant V are really cool, humble, and innovating people. Listen for Anthony Valadez cover for Mar on an instrumental!

Finest Ego | Monthly Mix #001 – June 2011: DZA “Spiders Defeated“

Photobucket

The merry men of Finest Ego have just kicked off what looks like being a monthly selection of mixes. First up DZA showcases his work of late. Since his visit to the Red Bull Music Academy in London last year, DZA has gone on to create releases for Error Broadcast and Black Acre Records, but now he is back with his Supershark EP.

A joint release between Jus Like Music Records and Project Mooncircle, the Supershark EP, is a hectic array of electronic mayhem with synths, bleeps and heavy beats. This release stands apart from the crowd with its exceptional layering of anarchic sounds over strong, unwavering, hip-hop-influenced beats and breaks. DZA’s ability to weave electronic sounds to create atmosphere and feeling is nothing short of astounding. 16 minutes of pure inspiration that will make even the most seasoned heads look up and take note.

The release party is on the 18th June at Panke, Berlin, but in the meanwhile you can cozy your ears with this mix.

Rinse FM: Numbers Ft Jamie XX

Photobucket

Time we turned our attention to Jamie xx and his steel drums and syncopated drum patterns. “Far Nearer” was officially released this week on Numbers. Jamie xx joined the Numbers posse on Rinse.fm for this hour and 45 min mix that does not discriminate any genre. From old school disco into some deep house into a chopped and screwed “Far Nearer” mashed with “Footcrab” into a steel drum Drake and Wayne mash-up into Burial – this mix has it all.

Cosmopolyphonic Radio - Fitz Ambro$e Guest Mix

Photobucket

It's only right. Repping Japan by way of the Canadian East Coast, we got Fitz Ambro$e who's been selected to curate the Cosmopolyphonic Guest Mix #22. Nice to hear from Fitz and his 80 some bpm beat science. If you've not come across his material, you can catch his 1st PDISO release off ICASEA to get a feel for that bass heavy, Roger Lynn swing. As ever with the Nova Scotia badman, expect that yummy 80bpm slow flow full of bleeps, blings, flashing LEDs and MPC 1000 swing.
