Stones Throw Podcast #70

Photobucket

J.Rocc got his hands on a bunch of reference CDs of upcoming Stones Throw releases: The Minimal Wave Tapes Vol. 2, Quakers, Myron & E, Jonwayne, Jonti, Steve Arrington and some other cats ... full track list coming soon ... maybe.

Following last year's album Some Cold Rock Stuf and the recent Stay Fresh EP, J Rocc has been busy touring with Blackstar and the Madlib Medicine Show as official DJ on both shows, unofficially as the glue that holds the whole damn thing together. He's recently put together a special set of his own "Mystery Tracks" culled from the two or three "Mystery Disc" sets included with Some Cold Rock Stuf. We'll have the Mystery Tracks up next.

The latest stones throw podcast, and first of 2012, is curated by J Rocc. More need not be added.

Subscribe if for unfathomable reasons unbeknownst to me, you haven't already.

Freddie Gibbs & Madlib - Thuggin

Photobucket

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Madlib is still well and truly on it. As he took his Medicine Show tour en route to San Francisco, the producer announced a collaborative project with the rapper Freddie Gibbs. The 6-track record is released on Madlib's Madlib Invazion label - the imprint the producer founded to release his 13 Madlib Medicine Show volumes. The duo’s as-of-yet untitled album is planned for release in first quarter 2012, but they found time to debut 'Thuggin' & 'Deep' and put out the Thuggin EP.

For Madlib, this marks another entry in an exciting series of collaborative albums that he has created with the likes of DOOM (Madvillainy), the late J Dilla (Jaylib) and Strong Arm Steady (In Search Of Stoney Jackson). For Gibbs, the album serves as somewhat of a departure: coming off the heels of his acclaimed Cold Day In Hell album, and before the release of the album he’s finishing for Young Jeezy’s CTE imprint, this project gives the Gary, Indiana-bred, LA-based rapper a chance to stretch out over the Beat Konducta’s lush musical tapestry. If the first single is any indication, this collaboration will find Gibbs’ rough raps landing atop smoldering soul and jagged psychedelia.

Created specially for Madlib’s Medicine Show Tour, late 2011 the Thuggin’ EP contains vocals, instrumentals and two bonus beats. Artwork by Jeff Jank features a dual A-side, "Madlib" embossed on one side, "Freddie Gibbs" on the flip. Head over to Stones Throw to grab it.

Be sure to keep your ears peeled for Blackstar's reunion album too with Talib and Mos hinting that Madlib is handling a large part of the production on that one too...

Dam Funk: InnaFocusedDaze

Photobucket

"Make no mistake, at heart Damon Riddick has a musically omnivorous bent, with an equal ardor for soul, metal, jazz, techno, disco, and rock. Ask him about Prefab Sprout or Todd Rundgren and turn your tape recorder on to remember the recommendations. But at heart, he is a funkster, both traditional and experimental, futuristic and nostalgic. The Gemini Twin, a master of duality. InnaFocusedDaze is the appetizer for his next full length, due next year on Stones Throw."

Los Angeles' funk evangelist, modern Galactic Warrior and ambassador of cool, Dam-Funk returns with his latest creations gratis composing four new songs - all original material on Scion A/V. Each song has its own distinct character, united by Dam-Funk's dedication to constant musical experimentation. If the freebies Dam’s been delivering all summer haven’t whetted your appetite for InnaFocusedDaze I don't know what to tell you! Aside from those, this marks his first real project since 2009′s expansive and impressive Toeachizown. InnaFocusedDaze sounds exactly like its title implies. It’s hazy, fuzzy, and should leave you in a daze once you’re finished spinning the brief, albeit great, affair.

Be sure to keep an ear out for dude’s absolutely stellar guitar playing, which just might be a preview of what we can expect on the proper follow-up to Toeachizown. This serves as a precursor to that full length due to fall next year on Stones Throw. The 10″ shiny black plastic will be coming out soon but in the meantime preview below, and click here to download.

Flying Lotus: Lovers Melt Vol. 2

Photobucket

Flying Lotus' previous Stones Throw mix Lovers Melt featured obscure tracks like The Sylvers’ “I’ll Never Be Ashamed“ and now he's back offering some more.

“Lovers Melt 2 will hopefully be part of your Summer sound. Some of my favorite songs ever. Some you know, some you might not.”

It’s two and a half hours long. It’s full of crate digging and thrift store hustling music, a winning combo resulting in a must-have mix.

Stones Throw Podcast #64

Photobucket

2011 is only four days old, but early omens indicate that it will be an auspicious one for fans of mythologically delayed projects. Stones Throw opens up with label leader and DJ extraordinaire Peanut Butter Wolf on the 1′s & 2′s, the man runs through a slew of material that you can expect to drop on Stones Throw in 2011.

The rumored reunion of Madvillain, the self-proclaimed America's Most Blunted, promises to satisfy fans of the enigmatic principals, MF Doom and producer Madlib. Last year, the pair dropped "Paper Mill,' as part of Adult Swim's Singles Program, a 2-minute swerve of non-sequitirs, Brazilian soul and boasts about being on the cover of Playbill.

The latest teasers from the sequel to 2004's ballyhooed "Madvillainy" find Doom "thanking our sponsor for financing the parts for this Frankenstein monster/Along with my partner who's a bro of few words/we did this research for true nerds and two birds." Over angelic coos, Doom slips comfortably into his metal-faced villain role, casting off dire threats and slick double-entrendres. It's more sequel than revolution, as Doom and Madlib give the fans what they want and expect: dusty samples, dirty beats and slippery raps.

Once almost exclusively a haven for underground hip-hop, the label has expanded to include R&B, soul, funk, dance music and obscure archival gems from all corners of the world. Accordingly, Wolf's mix includes new tracks from our boogie-bustin' cousin Dam-Funk (solo and in collaboration with Slave frontman Steve Arrington), electronic renaissance man James Pants, turntable king J. Rocc and Mayer Hawthorne, along with a spate of newcomers who will probably be on the cover of Playbill at this time next year.
