Desmond Cheese Collection - MondayJazz

Photobucket

MondayJazz strikes again, propping up a mix from the antipodean duo Desmond Cheese. The Brisbane instrumental tag team (Makcheese & Desmond Bagley) came out of the woodwork and into the lime light, with the release of their debut album, "Fame & Fortune" (embedded below) and following on Deejay Butcher has kindly compiled a few of the tracks into a mix that is a wicked exposition of what the Brisbanites term 'Instruhoptronica!'

It seems that if gold diggers from the 19th century would listen to hip-hop, Desmond Cheese might be their choice...

Protassov - Do You Ride The Money Train?

Photobucket

Protassov's musical output is an unrestrained balancing act. He believes in the power of magic and you could never nail him down to one musical genre. Porno soundtrack organs are dancing shamelessly with a folk guitar. Metallic industrial noises caress disco balls without suspecting the threatening showdown lurking just around the corner.

Protassovs Music is funky and sometimes filled with exotic clichés – but always with a twinkle in ones eye. After playing guitar in several bands since the early nineties, he has concentrated on making beats for Switchstance Recordings for a couple of years now. The label's creed and therefore the style of its producers and DJs is to have ultimate freedom, whether in their musical movements or in "switching" between various styles. The aim of the label is to combine early musical influences such as Funk, Jazz, Latin, 90´s Hip Hop and Reggae with the most progressive techniques of electronic music production in order to create a new dynamic sound that pays respect to the diverse cultures it comes from.

In this way, Protassov's artistical work, besides the music he released on Switchstance Recordings Fantastic Freeriding Series, includes a Solo Album (Shalina Music 2008), Remixes for fellow musicians like Jugoe (Bastard Jazz) or labelmates Ancient Astronauts (ESL) and the 'Where we live' EP (2009)

His latest release 'Did you ride the Moneytrain', a three tracker out on Switchstance, prooves once again that Protassov is unpredictable: From Reggae riddims to Pop music Vibes his narrative style invites the listener to a musical universe filled with abundant freedom and fantastic projections, held together by our love and a strong belief in the beauty of the mind.

AD Bourke - Mirage

Photobucket

Just taking a moment to prop up this ultra-fiddly boogie funk workout from Citinite's Rome correspondent, AD Bourke, who deals with killer 80's inspired cosmic electrofunk and hints of boogie & slow broken beat similar to contemporaries like Onra, Funkineven & Dam Funk. Check out a few of the tracks from the upcoming EP releasing on vinyl & mp3 soon as well as a few other goodies on his soundcloud page.

Mirage looks to combine soul chords, hip hop beats and funk phrasing, and invites us on a trip full of light and expansion. The track which begins our journey, ‘Cosmic Connection', is the perfect introduction to Bourke's cosmic boogie style, with its relaxed rhythms overlayed by fizzing funk synthwork.

With the eight tracks that follow he goes to town on the tweakiest synth fills and rudest, shoulder-popping drum machines, sounding somewhere between a sex-starved Dam Funk and Architeq on crack.

Cop it!

Clutchy Hopkins - Psychedelic Hip Hop, Funk & Jazz - Selected by Colored-Inc.

Photobucket

Clutchy is a mystery wrapped in an enigma, covered in tape hiss, and deep-fried in a pot of melted funk. His true identity remains something of a mystery, but anything Clutchy related is sure as hell going to be dope. He possesses a knack for rap that most don't, and displays his brilliance humbly. This little member is courtesy of the guys over on Paris DJs getting in contact with Crate Diggler Records in order to license a track for an upcoming compilation, only to be hit back with a mix from the Clutchy organisation - probably compiled from a cave in the Mojave Desert.

So here it is, presenting an eclectic mix of Clutchy-mixed tracks, blending and bending the boundaries between mellow and mysterious.

Nouveaunoise - Paraphrase Accolade

Photobucket

Time for some beats for the lounge / headphones. Nouveaunoise are an Irish duo who specialise in intricate, dreamy electronica, with quality funk drums layered underneath for head-nod action. The band consists of Nial Conway and Conor Gaffney, coming to grips with every sort of synthesised sound, deteriorated loop and warped organic noise they can conjure. Its reminiscent, to these uncultured ears, of early Fourtet stuff, which is certainly a good thing. They've put up two free EPs for download, and if you like those I'd urge you to check out their bandcamp page where you can find their album for the bargainous price of 3 euros. That's less than the price of a pint; you know you want to..

Kelpe Mix for Svetlana Industries

Photobucket

As you may remember reading previously, Kelpe has been ploughing his own furrow since 2003, with a home on DC Recordings, a label more known for new disco. Like Architeq and Fulgeance he was producing warm, downtempo, funky synthesised joints before anybody had really thought to group this shit together or give it a name.

Having just released his Margins EP and with the Chocolate Money EP on the way (Previewed below) Kel McKeown is hitting that groove hard!

"Chocolate Money EP" Teaser by Kelpe

While you're waiting, Kelpe has put together the 5th in the Svetlana Industries series (heralding from Belgrade, Serbia), following on from the likes of Donga, Lukid, Coco Bryce and Teebs and once again helping to emphasise the belief that brevity is the soul of wit..

Full Crate & FS Green - Beat Mix for Carhartt

Photobucket

With a hole clutch of new releases out recently, it would have been easy to sleep on the latest in Melting Pot Music's Hi-Hat club series which strides onto it's fifth installment already. This one's been compiled by the prolific twosome of FS Green and Full Crate who continue to drop and push much of that magic that has come out of the Dutch scene. "Eggs And Pancakes" takes the best of both worlds – well chopped samples and so-called electronics – to express their vision of an instrumental hip-hop album in the year 2010. Be sure to grab that, and in the meanwhile adjust your waves to the latest of their mixes, one done for Carhartt.

Matthewdavid - All the Love I Fell for You (XLR8R Podcast)

Photobucket

The ranks of LA's beat scene have swelled exponentially in the past year, but even amongst the sea of FlyLo knockoffs, a small cadre of truly innovative producers continues to stand out. One of those producers is Matthewdavid, an accomplished beatmaker and sound collage artist who also happens to run the inventive Leaving Records label. Both David and the Leaving imprint are known for their love of unusual releases, whether it be limited-run cassettes with custom-made artwork or hand-painted floppy disks.

Matthewdavid conjures up a sound with an ever-evolving flow, and one that never fails to keep bodies and minds buzzing with warmth. His live sets are usually an exploration of deepest sea depths and in this case, the lower you dive the higher you get.

The guys over at XLR8R invited the Ambient Balladeer to curate the latest in their podcast series. David has combined abstract gems with field recordings, discarded cassettes, distorted vintage R&B instrumentals, and lots and lots of tape delay. When a mix includes song descriptions along the lines of "Mexican tape from the '80s I ended up throwing away," it's clearly not the average DJ offering.

01 Pacific Rim "Hong Kong Rain" (Chi)
02 Michael Jackson "Man In the Mirror (Instrumental)" (Epic)
03 Nicki Minaj "Your Love (Instrumental)" (Cash Money)
04 Kenny Loggins "I'm Gonna Do It Right" (Sony)
05 Matthewdavid "Be Honest"
06 DJ DMD feat. Lil Keke & Fat Pat "25 Lighters" (Wreckshop - SoSouth)
07 Matthewdavid "Noche y Dia" (Brainfeeder)
08 Shai "Comforter (Radio Re-mix)" (Gasoline Alley)
09 Off Balance Atlas "Immortality"
10 Hologram "Street Beat" (HBN)
11 The Ultimate in Relaxation "Mountain Retreat" (Magic Moods / Madacy)
12 Matthewdavid "Will Go Higher" (Open Wide Mix)
13 Milli Vanilli "Girl I'm Gonna Miss You" (Arista)
14 Cameo "Honey" (PolyGram)
15 "Mexican tape from the '80s I ended up throwing away"
16 "Quick flip of that Mexican tape I ended up throwing away"
17 Jodeci "Forever My Lady" (MCA)
18 Bell Biv DeVoe "Something In Your Eyes (Instrumental)" (MCA)

Krystal Klear - Ampsoul Mix, Rinse FM Mix

Photobucket

Winter rain and the november gloom almost always breed moments of rumination, so what better way to snap back then to do so with a bit of boogie funk! Here's a couple of mixes from Krystal Klear - producer of beats derived straight from 1980-1994. His musical journey has allowed him to create a sound that is truly his own, taking the best elements of new jack swing, 80s boogie and disco and infusing them with a heavy dose of LA swagger and a ridiculous amount of bottom end pressure. His retro futurist style is the soundtrack to a house party where Nino Brown, Dam Funk and Alexander O' Neal are all brocking out while the girl from the karate kid is eating caramel.

With releases on All City, Hoya Hoya and the Green Silver release on Cooly G's Dub Organizer label, Krystal Klear is stepping out of the abyss of the boogie cosmos.

The first mix is courtesy of Jay Scarlett's ampsoul show. A fantastic nu funk, swing oozing - mixtape for us.

This little funk nugget is from Rinse FM on Oct 23rd, where Eglo Records and Ho_Tep peddler, Alex Nut had the pleasure of having Krystal Klear in the studio, bringing much of that uptempo, booty shaking, boogie bizness to the british airwaves. Hace mucho tiempo as some would say.
