Fathom 9 - Opus Incomplete (Sounds Of Autumn)

Photobucket

The mic is an instrument, I am the Conduit, conveying the intimate sentiments of the Infinite!

Big things abound from Memphis. Beatsmith, Fathom 9 takes us on a journey through fall with Opus Incomplete (Sounds Of Autumn), a two-year old podcast compiled of beats all produced by him. Be sure to check it out, and then tune into the playlist embedded below for some serious Dilla-esque drunken drummin'..

If you thought Eric Lau had it in spades, well Fathom's got it in hearts! Be sure to pass through his blog for Fathom truisms and keep up with the beats here; those half quantized, half moved drums layered and reprogrammed with plenty of upper frequency knock on the kick - sound familiar....?

Cody ChesnuTT - Black Skin No Value

Photobucket

It's been nearly 8 years in the making, but Cody Chesnutt finally drops this EP.

Earlier this year he surprised the world by dropping “Come back like spring” as a freeload and of course kept his fans at the edge of their seats cause naturally everybody wanted more. Shorty after that “Do better to the young” and just yesterday “The quiet girl who eats alone” emerged on several blogs with the announcement of the EP “Black Skin No Value” that was released a couple of days ago.

As ever Cody is backed by uncomplicated acoustic strings, and ChestnuTT's raspy voice is both sooth and haunts the senses at the same time.

The Quiet Girl Who Eats Alone’ is a familiar minute long interlude, the kind that were all over the critically acclaimed The Headphone Masterpiece (2002) and showcases the power of ChesnuTT’s bare bone writing skills; a voice, a guitar and a melody that leaves you wanting more, yet perfectly sets up the next track.

‘Everybody’s Brother’ picks up where the preceding song left off, ChesnuTT talks about his former vices and the fact that there is ‘No turning back.’ ‘Where Is All The Money Going’ is a poignant song when we look at the current economic climate. Once again, it is so reminiscent of Marvin Gaye’s work in it’s composition, particularly the choice of background vocals and ad-libs, as well the lyrical content.

The EP closes with the phenomenal ‘To Be Upon The Perch’; once again, a bare bones track, with just ChesnuTT’s voice and a Honky Tonk piano banging out chords that are so pretty and haunting, all at once.

The EP is Black Skin/ No Value and the full length is Landing on A Hundred. As we know in the vernacular, keep it one hundred is a common thing. So the landing on one hundred is like landing on something truthful.. Once again something that breathes and lives, that transcends any age or generation. It’s just something you can feed off of. Like.. That’s food. Food is truth.

Black Skin/ No Value is an ironic and provocative approach for us to look at where we are as a community right now. To take an assessment of the decisions we’re making because we all know that every decision we make is based upon personal value or perspective of value. So you’re looking at the crisis that we’re in right now as a community. And look at why the value perception is so low within and without the community.
Head here to preview it, and then jump to here to grab it.

For those of you who want more than just 6 tracks after waiting for 8 years …not to worry a full length album by the name of “Landing On A hundred” is in the works and will be out in 2011.

Exile - Population Control Remixes (Video)

Coming out of the Plug Research Camp is another newbie from Exile, titled “Population Control.” It's a trippy, mind-bending video scored by Californian troika: Samyiam, Dibiase and Free The Robots who all remixed the same track featured on ‘AM/FM' (Radio rmx album). Inspired by Exile’s “We Are All In Power” video, visual artist Greg “The Dude” Ponstingl created the video, continuing the stop animation theme, using thousands of still images and striking visual effects to make a boombox literally come to life.

The result, another great animated piece with a just as formidable soundtrack, though if you are prone to seizures, look away.

And whilst we're at it, here's what Lilfuchs and Flylo have been upto:

and from The Two. Fifteens' with the direction of Ryan Paterson "Katana Or Tanto" takes the viewer on a vigorous martial arts journey inspired by rare kung-fu films, various psychedelic visuals and post-modern collage art.

The Daily Street 008 - Hackman

Photobucket

Following on from the Eccy post, there's The Daily Street: 008, with Hackman. Hackman's take on the whole progression of garage always seems to be a step ahead of the imitators, and here he slings together a quality mix of garage and house without letting it get too polite. Watch out for the James Fox making a sneaky appearance too.

The majority of the tunes are exclusive and unreleased (except for the Motor City Remix). The vibe is upbeat and quirky and follows a similar mould to xxxy's 002 mix. The last year has been a big one for Hackman, and he’s released three eps, and had a number of remixes for Bassanovva, Lemonade, and The Phantom. Be sure to check them out.

Hackman is best known for his work in the realms of UK Funky, having key releases on labels such as PTN, Shifting Peaks and Well Rounded. To anyone that is well read on the UK Funky and Bass Music scene that is taking over the UK at the moment, these labels should be ringing big alarm bells in your head. However, as time moves on we all move with it and it seems that Hackman has left the UK Funky movement to head into the world of House, and when listening to this mix I don’t feel that this is in any way a bad thing. It all seems to be being chucked under the large umbrella genre that is “Bass Music” these days anyway. 50 minutes of incredible music, a large chunk of which was made by the man himself, with near flawless mixing ability, mixtape 008 sits beautifully alongside our more recent mixes whilst still holding it’s own as an individual

Eccy - Milk It

Photobucket

Rhythm-Incursions take a trip back to Japan, and more specifically Tokyo, for their next guest mix this time roping in the talents of young producer Eccy (pronounced Eksy) who is a close friend of the Tokyo fam, the Raid System collective and label.

Following his appearance on Dubken's 'Loovia Mythos' album, which explored beats and electronic hip hop, Eccy’s moved into more upbeat territories in particular the UK Funky sounds and mutations that have originated from London and the UK over the last year. His new release, Flavour of Vice EP, is coming out before the end of the year on his own Slye Records with remixes from London’s Subeena and a flavour, pardon the pun, that is distinctively in line with the capital’s more tropical and percussive riddims.

Reflecting this is the guest mix he put together for Rhythm Incursions, called Milk It. It features a raft of the most interesting producers to have played around with UK Funky and House templates in the last year from Altered Natives to LuckyMe’s Jacques Greene, Hypno, Doc Daneeka, Subeena, Seiji, Roska and of course Eccy himself.

Eccy’s Flavour of Vice EP drops late 2010 on Slye Records. Loovia Mythos is out now also on Slye Records. You can find Eccy online at Myspace and Soundcloud.
